How a Strange 911 Landline Call Left Me Completely Baffled
This happened years ago, but it’s still something I think about to this day, and I’d love to hear what you guys think, paranormal or not.
About 5-6 years ago, I was working the night shift as a 911 operator/dispatcher. It was around 10:30 PM when I took a 911 call from a verified landline tied to a specific address. When I answered, no one responded, but I could hear faint moaning in the background and what sounded like a TV playing a commercial jingle. My immediate thought was that this was an elderly person who had fallen or needed medical assistance, which was common in the area.
When I pulled up the address, nothing stood out in the location history, except for a structure fire call a couple of years earlier. I assumed it was a minor fire, and the house was still intact since someone was calling from a landline.
The line went silent except for faint crackling, and with no response, I disconnected the call. I sent it up to dispatch as an unverified emergency, mentioning that I heard moaning and TV sounds but couldn’t confirm anything else. My dispatcher had two officers in the area, so they were sent to check it out.
A couple of minutes later, I received another call from the same landline. Again, I heard the same moaning and TV noises, but no one responded. Eventually, the line went silent once more, and I disconnected it.
The officers arrived on scene shortly after, and I waited for an update. A few minutes later, the dispatcher messaged me asking if the address was correct. I confirmed it had come in twice from the same residential landline. That’s when my dispatcher told me that the house had burned down a couple of years ago. All that remained was a concrete slab and some of the burned framing.
The officers checked the area, but no one was around, and none of the neighbors reported seeing or hearing anything.
I still think about that call. It was unsettling when I first took it due to the moaning and TV noises, but knowing that the house was burned down and uninhabited—let alone having no working phone line—made it even creepier.
Our Thoughts
This story stands out as one of the eeriest kinds of paranormal events: a 911 call from a place that shouldn't be able to make one. The fact that the call came from a landline connected to a house that had burned down adds a whole new level of mystery and fear. The moaning and TV sounds only make it more unsettling, as they evoke the feeling of someone or something trying to reach out, even though no one should be there.
The idea of receiving calls from locations with no living occupants or functional phone lines has appeared in other paranormal stories, often linked to residual energy or entities replaying events from the past. The fact that the officers found nothing only amplifies the feeling of unease.
Calls like these blur the line between the paranormal and reality, making us question what lingers in the places we assume are empty.
