Mystical Encounters with Dwarves and Gnomes in Fiji

In the rural areas of Fiji, sightings of dwarves and gnomes—though not the kind with pointed hats—are surprisingly common. These small beings, often mischievous and elusive, have become a part of local folklore. While people in Fiji generally refer to all these beings as dwarves, some believe the mischievous ones with pointed teeth are actually gnomes.

One such encounter was experienced by my mum during her childhood. While running a marathon with other primary school athletes, the children gathered beneath a tree, only to witness a small figure, too tiny to be human, with pointed teeth, perched on a tree branch, laughing. When a teacher arrived to investigate, the figure had vanished.

A friend of mine also had a disturbing experience with these beings. As a child, she was often terrorized by "little men" who would pinch, ridicule, and bully her, causing her sleepless nights. Her parents called traditional priests, who immediately identified an "infestation" of these creatures. After the priests performed their rituals, my friend was no longer bothered by the gnomes or dwarves.

Though these beings are deeply embedded in Fijian folklore, most sightings, while frequent, remain just that—sightings.

Our Thoughts

Folklore often blurs the line between myth and reality, and these stories from Fiji illustrate how deeply ingrained supernatural beliefs can become in a culture. The idea of dwarves and gnomes, particularly those with mischievous tendencies, echoes similar legends from around the world.

What stands out here is how common these sightings seem to be in rural Fiji, suggesting that these beings, whether real or imagined, play a significant role in local culture. The communal aspect of the encounters—children, parents, and even priests—creates a strong belief system that ties together personal experiences with cultural mythology.

It’s worth considering whether these experiences are psychological, cultural, or based on something yet to be understood. In any case, they offer a fascinating glimpse into the way myth and reality intertwine in our perception of the unknown.
